ἆρ᾽ οὖν ἄν με οἴεσθε τοσάδε ἔτη διαγενέσθαι εἰ ἔπραττον τὰ δημόσια, καὶ πράττων ἀξίως ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ ἐβοήθουν τοῖς δικαίοις καὶ ὥσπερ χρὴ τοῦτο περὶ πλείστου ἐποιούμην; πολλοῦ γε δεῖ, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι: οὐδὲ γὰρ ἂν ἄλλος [33a] ἀνθρώπων οὐδείς.
ἀλλ᾽ ἐγὼ διὰ παντὸς τοῦ βίου δημοσίᾳ τε εἴ πού τι ἔπραξα τοιοῦτος φανοῦμαι, καὶ ἰδίᾳ ὁ αὐτὸς οὗτος, οὐδενὶ πώποτε συγχωρήσας οὐδὲν παρὰ τὸ δίκαιον οὔτε ἄλλῳ οὔτε τούτων οὐδενὶ οὓς δὴ διαβάλλοντες ἐμέ φασιν ἐμοὺς μαθητὰς εἶναι. ἐγὼ δὲ διδάσκαλος μὲν οὐδενὸς πώποτ᾽ ἐγενόμην: εἰ δέ τίς μου λέγοντος καὶ τὰ ἐμαυτοῦ πράττοντος ἐπιθυμοῖ ἀκούειν, εἴτε νεώτερος εἴτε πρεσβύτερος, οὐδενὶ πώποτε ἐφθόνησα, οὐδὲ χρήματα μὲν λαμβάνων διαλέγομαι [33b] μὴ λαμβάνων δὲ οὔ, ἀλλ᾽ ὁμοίως καὶ πλουσίῳ καὶ πένητι παρέχω ἐμαυτὸν ἐρωτᾶν, καὶ ἐάν τις βούληται ἀποκρινόμενος ἀκούειν ὧν ἂν λέγω. καὶ τούτων ἐγὼ εἴτε τις χρηστὸς γίγνεται εἴτε μή, οὐκ ἂν δικαίως τὴν αἰτίαν ὑπέχοιμι, ὧν μήτε ὑπεσχόμην μηδενὶ μηδὲν πώποτε μάθημα μήτε ἐδίδαξα: εἰ δέ τίς φησι παρ᾽ ἐμοῦ πώποτέ τι μαθεῖν ἢ ἀκοῦσαι ἰδίᾳ ὅτι μὴ καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι πάντες, εὖ ἴστε ὅτι οὐκ ἀληθῆ λέγει.

Ahora bien: ¿pensáis que hubiera podido sobrevivir tantos y tantos años, si me hubiese dado a los asuntos públicos, si, obrando de una manera digna de varón recto, hubiera ayudado a lo justo, y si, como es debido, hiciera pasar la justicia por sobre todo? Ni con mucho, Varones atenienses, ni yo ni otro hombre alguno.
[33a] Así que si a lo largo de mi vida he hecho algo en público, me he presentado a la luz del día tal cual he dicho, y exactamente el mismo soy en privado; que a nadie ni en nada ni en manera alguna condesciendo cosa contra la justicia, ni a los que no son mis discípulos ni a ninguno de los que lo son; de los que mis calumniadores dicen ser discípulos míos. Que yo jamás he sido maestro de nadie; ahora que, si alguno desea oírme cuando hablo o hago mi quehacer, sea más joven que yo o más viejo, nunca me recelé de [33b] nadie en manera alguna. Ni dialogo por recibir dinero, ni dejo de dialogar por no recibirlo. Me presto, por el contrario, a ser interrogado lo mismo por pobre que por rico; y lo que digo, al responder, puede oírlo el que quiera. Y si por todo ello uno se vuelve bueno y otro no, no es justo que se me atribuya a mí la causa, que jamás me he comprometido a enseñar nada a nadie ni he sido maestro de nadie en nada. Y si alguno afirma haber aprendido de mí u oídome algo en privado que no lo hubieran podido oír todos los demás, sabed bien sabido que no dice verdad.

Do you believe that I could have lived so many years if I had been in public life and had acted as a good man should act, lending my aid to what is just and considering that of the highest importance? Far from it, men of Athens; nor could [33a] any other man.
But you will find that through all my life, both in public, if I engaged in any public activity, and in private, I have always been the same as now, and have never yielded to any one wrongly, whether it were any other person or any of those who are said by my traducers to be my pupils. But I was never any one’s teacher. If any one, whether young or old, wishes to hear me speaking and pursuing my mission, I have never objected, [33b] nor do I converse only when I am paid and not otherwise, but I offer myself alike to rich and poor; I ask questions, and whoever wishes may answer and hear what I say. And whether any of them turns out well or ill, I should not justly be held responsible, since I never promised or gave any instruction to any of them; but if any man says that he ever learned or heard anything privately from me, which all the others did not, be assured that he is lying.
