ἀλλὰ γάρ, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, τοῦτο μὲν ἤδη δῆλον [26b] οὑγὼ ἔλεγον, ὅτι Μελήτῳ τούτων οὔτε μέγα οὔτε μικρὸν πώποτε ἐμέλησεν. ὅμως δὲ δὴ λέγε ἡμῖν, πῶς με φῂς διαφθείρειν, ὦ Μέλητε, τοὺς νεωτέρους; ἢ δῆλον δὴ ὅτι κατὰ τὴν γραφὴν ἣν ἐγράψω θεοὺς διδάσκοντα μὴ νομίζειν οὓς ἡ πόλις νομίζει, ἕτερα δὲ δαιμόνια καινά; οὐ ταῦτα λέγεις ὅτι διδάσκων διαφθείρω;
πάνυ μὲν οὖν σφόδρα ταῦτα λέγω.
πρὸς αὐτῶν τοίνυν, ὦ Μέλητε, τούτων τῶν θεῶν ὧν νῦν ὁ λόγος ἐστίν, εἰπὲ ἔτι σαφέστερον καὶ ἐμοὶ καὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν [26c] τουτοισί. ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐ δύναμαι μαθεῖν πότερον λέγεις διδάσκειν με νομίζειν εἶναί τινας θεούς—καὶ αὐτὸς ἄρα νομίζω εἶναι θεοὺς καὶ οὐκ εἰμὶ τὸ παράπαν ἄθεος οὐδὲ ταύτῃ ἀδικῶ —οὐ μέντοι οὕσπερ γε ἡ πόλις ἀλλὰ ἑτέρους, καὶ τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν ὅ μοι ἐγκαλεῖς, ὅτι ἑτέρους, ἢ παντάπασί με φῂς οὔτε αὐτὸν νομίζειν θεοὺς τούς τε ἄλλους ταῦτα διδάσκειν.
ταῦτα λέγω, ὡς τὸ παράπαν οὐ νομίζεις θεούς.

Pero resulta ya evidente, Varones atenienses, lo que [26b] decía: que a Méleto jamás le han importado poco ni mucho tales asuntos.
Con todo, dinos, Meleto, ¿de qué manera dices que pervierto a los jóvenes? ¿O no es evidente, según la acusación que has redactado, que los pervierto enseñándoles a no creer en los dioses legalizados en quienes cree la Ciudad, sino en otros daimonios nuevos? ¿No dices que, enseñándoles esto, es como los pervierto?
—Esto es lo que digo en firme.
Pues ¡por estos mismos dioses!, Meleto, cuyo nombre estamos tomando en nuestros labios, dime más claramente a mí y a los varones presentes porque yo no acabo de entenderlo: [26c] ¿afirmas que enseño a creer que existen ciertos dioses, —y en este caso creo que hay dioses y no soy del todo ateo ni por este motivo soy culpable, aunque no crea en los mismos en que cree la Ciudad sino en otros, siendo esto lo que me echas en cara, el que sean otros—, o bien afirmas que ni creo yo mismo de ninguna manera en dioses y que enseño otros a no creer en ninguno de ellos y de ninguna manera?
—Esto es precisamente lo que digo: que no crees de ninguna manera en dioses.

But enough of this, for, men of Athens, this is clear, as I said, that Meletus never [26b] cared much or little for these things.
But nevertheless, tell us, how do you say, Meletus, that I corrupt the youth? Or is it evident, according to the indictment you brought, that it is by teaching them not to believe in the gods the state believes in, but in other new spiritual beings? Do you not say that it is by teaching this that I corrupt them? “Very decidedly that is what I say.” Then, Meletus, for the sake of [26c] these very gods about whom our speech now is, speak still more clearly both to me and to these gentlemen. For I am unable to understand whether you say that I teach that there are some gods, and myself then believe that there are some gods, and am not altogether godless and am not a wrongdoer in that way, that these, however, are not the gods whom the state believes in, but others, and this is what you accuse me for, that I believe in others; or you say that I do not myself believe in gods at all and that I teach this unbelief to other people. “That is what I say, that you do not believe in gods at all.”
