Leyes<\/i>, 895d, donde se enumeran estos tres elementos: \u1f44\u03bd\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1 (\u00abnombre\u00bb), \u03bb\u03cc\u03b3\u03bf\u03c2 (\u00abdefinici\u00f3n\u00bb) y \u03bf\u1f50\u03c3\u03af\u03b1 (\u00abrealidad o cosa en s\u00ed\u00bb), dejando de lado al \u03b5\u1f34\u03b4\u03c9\u03bb\u03bf\u03bd (\u00abel e\u00eddolo, o imagen\u00bb).<\/span> la ciencia misma, es la cuarta; mas como quinta hay que poner lo que sea, a la vez, cognoscible y verdaderamente ser. [342b]<\/b> La primera es el nombre; la segunda, la definici\u00f3n; la tercera; el e\u00eddolo; la cuarta, la ciencia. Si quieres aprender lo reci\u00e9n dicho toma un caso, y comprende todo desde \u00e9l. Una cosa hay llamada \u00abc\u00edrculo\u00bb; de \u00e9l es ese mismo nombre que acabamos de pronunciar. Lo segundo es su definici\u00f3n, compuesta de nombres y verbos, porque eso de \u00ablo distante respecto del centro por igual y desde todos los extremos\u00bb ser\u00eda la definici\u00f3n de lo que tiene por nombre \u00abredondo, circunferencia, [342c]<\/b> c\u00edrculo\u00bb X*bX.2<\/a><\/sup>Para la definici\u00f3n de c\u00edrculo, cf. Timeo<\/i> 33 b; Parm\u00e9nides<\/i> 137e.<\/i><\/span> Lo tercero es lo dibujado, borrado, torneado, destruido; de todo esto el c\u00edrculo, sobre el cual todo eso versa, nada padece, por ser algo diverso de todo ello. Lo cuarto: ciencia y entendimiento, y opini\u00f3n verdadera sobre tales cosas. Todo esto hay que ponerlo, a su vez, como algo \u00abuno\u00bb, inseyente X*cX3<\/a><\/sup>i. e.<\/i> sin la cualidad de ser.<\/span> no en voces ni en corporales figuras, sino en almas, en lo cual, evidentemente, tal \u00abuno\u00bb est\u00e1 siendo diverso de la naturaleza del c\u00edrculo mismo y de las tres [342d]<\/b> cosas anteriormente mencionadas. De \u00e9stas, la m\u00e1s pr\u00f3xima, por cong\u00e9nere y semejante, con la quinta, es el entendimiento X*dX;4<\/a><\/sup>Cf. Rep\u00fablica<\/i> 490b.<\/span> las otras, distan m\u00e1s. Lo mismo vale acerca de figura recta y circular, de color, y aun de Bien, Bello, Justo y de todo cuerpo (fabricado o naturalmente engendrado): de fuego, agua, y parecidos; y vale de todo viviente, de h\u00e1bitos, \u00e1nimos y de toda clase de acciones y pasiones. Pero si de una manera [342e]<\/b> u otra no se captaren las cuatro primeras cosas, jam\u00e1s se llegar\u00e1 a poseer perfectamente la ciencia de la quinta. A\u00f1\u00e1dese a esto, que, por la debilidad propia de las palabras, no pasar\u00e1 todo ello de un intento de declarar tanto la calidad de cada cosa como el ser de ella. Por lo cual nadie con entendimiento [34<\/b>3<\/b>a]<\/b> se atrever\u00e1 jam\u00e1s a poner en palabras lo que haya entendido X*eX,5<\/a><\/sup>Cf. Cr\u00e1tilo<\/i> 438d, e.<\/span> y esto, en eso inmoble que le sobreviene a letras grabadas. Apr\u00e9ndeselo una vez m\u00e1s en lo que se est\u00e1 diciendo: todo c\u00edrculo \u2014de los descritos en la pr\u00e1ctica corriente o de los torneados\u2014 est\u00e1 relleno de lo contrario a lo quinto, pues es tangente en todas partes con lo recto. Empero, \u00abel c\u00edrculo mismo\u00bb, afirmamos, nada tiene en s\u00ed mismo, ni poco ni mucho, de la naturaleza de la contraria. Afirmamos, adem\u00e1s, que el nombre de cosa alguna tiene, en nada, nada firme X*fX;6<\/a><\/sup>Cfr. Cr\u00e1tilo<\/i> 384d, e, para la idea de que los nombres no son fijaciones naturales, sino convencionales.<\/span> [343b]<\/b> que nada impide llamar \u00abrectas\u00bb las cosas ahora llamadas \u00abredondas\u00bb; y a las rectas, \u00abredondas\u00bb; y nada de menos firme advendr\u00e1 a las cosas porque se les cambi\u00f3 un nombre por el contrario. Y aun respecto de definici\u00f3n, vale igual raz\u00f3n; ya que se compone de nombres y verbos; que en nada es ella suficientemente firmemente firme X*gX.7<\/a><\/sup>Cf. Teeteto<\/i> 208b ss., sobre la inestabilidad de las definiciones.<\/span> Largo, largu\u00edsimo fuera hablar de cu\u00e1n oscuro es lo referente a esas cuatro cosas. Empero, lo m\u00e1ximamente importante es lo que hace bien poco dijimos: que de ese d\u00fao de cosas: \u00ablo de [343c]<\/strong> ser\u00bb y \u00ablo de cualitativo\u00bb no es lo cualitativo, sino lo que es, lo que el alma busca conocer. Por ofrecer cada una de las cuatro cosas a alma de palabra y obra lo no buscado, lo presentado por cada una de ellas \u2014dicho o exhibido\u2014 les resulta a las sensaciones siempre y f\u00e1cilmente refutable, rellenado, por decirlo as\u00ed, a todo var\u00f3n de toda clase de despiste y oscuridad. Donde, pues, a causa de una mala crianza no estemos acostumbrados a buscar lo verdadero, nos basta con lo ofrecido por los e\u00eddolos para no hacer el rid\u00edculo mutuamente preguntados y preguntones, \u2014poder como podemos [343d]<\/b> distinguir X*hX8<\/a><\/sup>analizar sint\u00e9ticamente.<\/span> y arg\u00fcir contra las cuatro. Mas cuando nos fuercen a responder y declarar lo referente a la quinta, dominar\u00e1 uno cualquiera de los capaces a revolverlo todo; y har\u00e1 que quien o de palabra o por escrito o en respuestas lo explique, d\u00e9 a los m\u00e1s la impresi\u00f3n de no conocer \u00e9l nada de lo que se meta a escribir o a hablar, ignorantes ellos a veces de que no es el alma del escritor o hablante la refutada, sino la naturaleza de cada una de aquellas cuatro cosas, por [343e]<\/b> naturalmente deficiente. Empero un trato que, ascendiendo y descendiendo, pase por todas ellas, con dificultad produce ciencia de lo bien nacido, aun en el bien nacido X*iX.9<\/a><\/sup>A trav\u00e9s de esta comparaci\u00f3n entre modos humanos y a este trato entre im\u00e1genes, nociones, definiciones, se llega a la intuici\u00f3n del intelecto (vide infra<\/i> 344b).<\/span> Que si de natural es malo cual es, habitualmente, el alma de la mayor\u00eda tanto para aprender como para las llamadas \u00abcostumbres\u00bb, [344a]<\/b> por estar corrompidas, ni todo un Linceo X*jX10<\/a><\/sup>Un argonauta, famoso por su agudeza visual, que aqu\u00ed hiperb\u00f3licamente se supone que tambi\u00e9n produce agudeza de visi\u00f3n.<\/span> har\u00eda que los tales vieran. En una palabra: en quien no sea cong\u00e9nere con algo, ni buena instrucci\u00f3n ni memoria har\u00e1n jam\u00e1s nada, porc1ue, para comenzar, no se engendrar\u00e1n en disposiciones tan extra\u00f1as. De modo que cuantos ni hayan nacido para, ni sean cong\u00e9neres con lo justo y con cuanto es bello \u2014aunque algunos de ellos sean buenos para aprender y recordar otras cosas\u2014, ni cuantos, cong\u00e9neres, sean malos para aprender y recordar, ninguno de ellos aprender\u00e1 jam\u00e1s, en lo que [344b]<\/b> es posible, la verdad acerca de virtud y vicio. Porque se ha de aprender a la vez tanto lo falso como lo verdadero X*kX11<\/a><\/sup>Cf. Leyes<\/i> 816d.<\/span> de la realidad \u00edntegra, \u2014con toda laboriosidad y mucho tiempo, que es lo que al comienzo dije X*lX.12<\/a><\/sup>Cfr. supra<\/i> 341c.<\/span> Pero, al confrontar, trabajosamente cada una de ellas con las dem\u00e1s: nombres, definiciones, vistas, sensaciones\u2026, discutido ello con bien intencionadas discusiones y sirvi\u00e9ndose, sin malicia, de preguntas y respuestas, surgen cual rel\u00e1mpago sapiencia e inteligencia sobre cada cosa, \u2014poniendo en m\u00e1xima tensi\u00f3n la potencia [344c]<\/b> humana. Precisamente por esto todo var\u00f3n serio, al tratar de cosas serias, estar\u00e1 bien lejos de, escribi\u00e9ndolas X*mX,13<\/a><\/sup>Cf. Leyes<\/i> 769a; Pol\u00edtico<\/i> 294a.<\/span> exponerlas a la envidia y despiste de los humanos. Hay, pues, que reconocer, en una palabra, que si se ve algo de alguien puesto por escrito \u2014sea en leyes de legislador, o en otro asunto, sea el que fuere\u2014 no tom\u00f3 muy en serio lo escrito aun en el caso de que \u00e9l fuera serio, \u2014descansa lo serio, all\u00e1 en la m\u00e1s bella regi\u00f3n de \u00e9l.
