Pues bien: el primer tiempo de mi estancia en Sicilia se termin\u00f3 tal como lo dije X*aX,1<\/a><\/sup>Recordatorio de lo dicho en 330c, d, antes de empezar sus consejos a los amigos de Di\u00f3n.<\/span> \u2014antes de dar consejos [338a]<\/b> a familiares y compa\u00f1eros de Di\u00f3n. Despu\u00e9s de ello, trat\u00e9, de la manera entonces posible, de persuadir a Dionisio de que me dejara partir. Hechas las paces \u2014que hab\u00eda entonces guerra en Sicilia X*bX2<\/a><\/sup>Carta<\/i> III 317a.<\/span>\u2014, convinimos en que Dionisio, tal afirm\u00f3, nos llamar\u00eda de nuevo a Di\u00f3n y a m\u00ed, cuando llegara a estar, \u00e9l mismo, m\u00e1s firme en el poder; mas ped\u00eda a Di\u00f3n que no considerara lo que le estaba pasando como destierro, sino cual traslado. Convine, a tenor de tales palabras, en volver. Hechas las paces, me llam\u00f3; mas exig\u00eda de Di\u00f3n que [338b]<\/b> aguardara a\u00fan un a\u00f1o. En cuanto a m\u00ed, me ped\u00eda fuera en todo caso. Me urg\u00eda, pues, Di\u00f3n y exig\u00eda el que me embarcara, porque, adem\u00e1s, se hablaba mucho en Sicilia de que en Dionisio hab\u00eda ya renacido, de admirable manera, la apetencia por la filosof\u00eda; por lo cual Di\u00f3n nos exig\u00eda, incesantemente, que no desobedeci\u00e9ramos a tal llamado. Mas yo, por cierto, sab\u00eda bien que, a los j\u00f3venes, les pasan muchas de tales cosas respecto de la filosof\u00eda. Me pareci\u00f3, no obstante, [338c]<\/b> ser m\u00e1s seguro entonces no hacer caso en esto ni a Di\u00f3n ni a Dionisio; y me indispuse con ambos al responder que era anciano y que nada de lo que estaba haciendo se hac\u00eda seg\u00fan lo convenido. Pareci\u00f3 que, despu\u00e9s de esto, fuera Arquitas X*cX3<\/a><\/sup>Arquitas de Tarento fue fil\u00f3sofo, matem\u00e1tico, astr\u00f3nomo, estadista y militar c. 430 a.C.-360 a.C.; vide<\/i> 350a, y Carta<\/i> XIII 360c.<\/span> a donde Dionisio, \u2014porque, antes de partir yo, habiendo hospedado y hecho amistad con Arquitas, con los de Tarento y con Dionisio, me di a la mar; algunos otros [338d]<\/b> en Siracusa hab\u00edan escuchado eso que se dec\u00eda de Di\u00f3n y, de \u00e9stos, algunos estaban llenos a rebosar de lo referido sobre filosof\u00eda. Me parece que \u00e9stos trataron de hablar sobre tales puntos con Dionisio, cual si Dionisio hubiera comprendido todo mi pensamiento. Pero Dionisio quien, por lo dem\u00e1s, no carece de una natural facultad de aprender, es, por otra parte, extremadamente vanidoso; tal vez, pues, le agrad\u00f3 lo que se dec\u00eda, a la vez que se avergonz\u00f3 de que [338e]<\/b> se descubriera no haber aprendido nada durante mi estancia; de lo cual le vino el deseo de aprenderlo m\u00e1s claramente, estimulado a la vez por la vanidad. Porque no me oy\u00f3 durante mi anterior estancia, lo expliqu\u00e9 en lo anteriormente dicho X*dX.4<\/a><\/sup>Vide<\/i> 330b.<\/span> Cuando volv\u00ed, pues, a casa sano y salvo, mas me negu\u00e9, por segunda vez, a su llamada \u2014como acabo de decir\u2014 me pareci\u00f3 que Dionisio se resent\u00eda grandemente en su vanidad de que a algunos pareciera que lo menospreciaba yo; y que [339a]<\/b> por haber hecho yo la experiencia de su natural, a la vez que de su car\u00e1cter y r\u00e9gimen de vida, ya no quer\u00eda, descontento, volver a donde \u00e9l. Pues bien: es de justicia decir la verdad y aguantar el que, oyendo alguien lo sucedido, menosprecie mi filosof\u00eda; crea, por el contrario, que el tirano ten\u00eda sobrada raz\u00f3n. Por cierto que Dionisio me envi\u00f3, por tercera vez X*eX,5<\/a><\/sup>Plat\u00f3n hab\u00eda rechazado la segunda invitaci\u00f3n, vide<\/i> 338e.<\/span> una trirreme para comodidad del viaje; me envi\u00f3 adem\u00e1s a Arquedemo, a quien, cre\u00eda, apreciaba yo m\u00e1s que a nadie [339b]<\/b> en Sicilia, consocio de Arquitas, y a otros conocidos de Sicilia. Todos ellos me comunicaban la misma noticia: cu\u00e1nto y cu\u00e1n admirablemente hab\u00eda progresado Dionisio en filosof\u00eda. Me remiti\u00f3, adem\u00e1s, una carta bien larga, sabiendo mis sentimientos hac\u00eda Di\u00f3n y el inter\u00e9s que, a su vez, ten\u00eda Di\u00f3n de que me embarcara y llegara a Siracusa X*fX.6<\/a><\/sup>Vide<\/i> Carta<\/i> III 317.<\/span> Con tales datos preparada, la carta comenzaba, con una frase cual: [339c]<\/b> \u00abDionisio, a Plat\u00f3n\u00bb; dicho lo acostumbrado en tales casos, lo primero que, a continuaci\u00f3n, dec\u00eda no era sino que \u00absi dej\u00e1ndote persuadir por nosotros, vienes ahora a Sicilia, primero, los asuntos de Di\u00f3n tendr\u00e1s facultad de resolverlos de la manera que t\u00fa mismo quieras, \u2014s\u00e9 que querr\u00e1s ni m\u00e1s ni menos que lo debido y yo convendr\u00e9 en ello. Pero si no, ninguno de los asuntos de Di\u00f3n se arreglar\u00eda seg\u00fan tu criterio, ni otros ni los personales de \u00e9l\u00bb. Esto, dicho as\u00ed. Lo dem\u00e1s, fuera largo e inoportuno de decir. Otras cartas llegaron: de Arquitas y de los de Tarento, encomi\u00e1sticas [339d]<\/b> sobre la filosof\u00eda de Dionisio; y que, si no fuera ahora, echar\u00eda yo a perder, de todo en todo la amistad que, por mi medio, hab\u00eda nacido hacia ellos en Dionisio; de importancia, ella, no peque\u00f1a para lo pol\u00edtico. Tiraban de mi por una parte los de Sicilia e Italia; por otra, los de Atenas sencillamente casi me empujaban con s\u00faplicas. Y una vez m\u00e1s aduc\u00edase la misma raz\u00f3n: no hay que traicionar a Di\u00f3n [339e]<\/b> ni a los hu\u00e9spedes y compa\u00f1eros de Tarento. A m\u00ed mismo, por cierto, no se me hac\u00eda nada sorprendente lo que un hombre joven, escuchando asuntos, dignos de estudio, bien ense\u00f1ado, llegue a tomar amor por la mejor de las vidas. Hab\u00eda, pues, que poner claramente a prueba tal situaci\u00f3n y en modo alguno traicionada, ni ser yo causa de una tal y tan verdadera ofensa X*gX,7<\/a><\/sup>Enti\u00e9ndase, no colaborar para que Dionisio llegara a convertirse en un verdadero fil\u00f3sofo aprovechando sus buenas condiciones.<\/span> en caso de que, en realidad, fueran [340a]<\/b> las cosas como se hab\u00edan dicho de \u00e9l. Pues bien: parto, vendados los ojos con tal razonamiento, \u2014grandemente temeroso yo, y no demasiado bello adivino, como apareci\u00f3.
