La primera, por entonces \u00e1rida adem\u00e1s de apartada de la v\u00eda principal que conduc\u00eda al <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peloponeso\">Peloponeso<\/a> a trav\u00e9s del itsmo. Por su parte, la Arcadia constitu\u00eda una especie de fortaleza natural en el coraz\u00f3n del Peloponeso, defendida por altas monta\u00f1as y habitada por habitantes de los valles perfectamente adaptados a la guerra de guerrillas contra los ej\u00e9rcitos invasores. La tradici\u00f3n consideraba a los arcadios aut\u00f3ctonos (es decir, pre-d\u00f3ricos), oponi\u00e9ndolos a los \u00abinmigrantes\u00bb (\u1f10\u03c0\u03ae\u03bb\u03c5\u03b4\u03b5\u03c2) <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorios\">dorios<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dr%C3%ADopes\">dr\u00edopes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89lide_(regi%C3%B3n_hist%C3%B3rica)#Historia\">eleos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Etolia#Historia\">etolios<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemnos#Leyenda\">lemnios<\/a>.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000007750000000000000000_13616\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Herod., <em>Historiae<\/em>, VIII, 73; Paus\u0101nias, <em>Graeciae d\u0113scr\u012bpti\u014d<\/em> V, 1, 2; Stephanus B\u0233zant\u012bnus, <em>Ethnic\u012bs<\/em> (\u1f18\u03b8\u03bd\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac) s.v. <em>Arkad\u00eda<\/em>.<\/span> Se sent\u00edan particularmente orgullosos de tal condici\u00f3n ind\u00edgena \u2014sobre todo despu\u00e9s de la predicaci\u00f3n nacionalista y separatista de <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lycomedes_of_Mantinea\">Licomedes de Mantinea<\/a>\u2014<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000007750000000000000000_13616\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\">Xenoph\u014dn, <em>Hellenica<\/em>, VII, 1, 23.<\/span> y se consideraban solidarios con los dem\u00e1s aut\u00f3ctonos del Peloponeso reducidos a servidumbre por los invasores. Esto qued\u00f3 de manifiesto cuando un adivino arcadio incit\u00f3 a la revuelta a los esclavos de <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Argos_(Grecia)\">Argos<\/a>,<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000007750000000000000000_13616\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\">Herod., <em>Historiae<\/em>, VI, 83, 2.<\/span> y m\u00e1s tarde, en el siglo IV, cuando realizaban osadas incursiones contra los destacamentos espartanos y \u00abnada los deten\u00eda, ni la noche, ni las inclemencias del tiempo, ni la longitud del viaje, ni las dificultades de los pasos monta\u00f1osos\u00bb.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000007750000000000000000_13616\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">Xenoph. <em>Hell<\/em>. VII, 1, 25.<\/span>Arcadia era el baluarte anti-d\u00f3rico del Peloponeso, el asilo inviolable de todos aquellos que se escapaban del yugo espartano, la presa codiciada y siempre fallida de la expansi\u00f3n lacedemonia.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000007750000000000000000_13616\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000007750000000000000000_13616-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\">Herod., <em>Hist<\/em>., I, 66.<\/span> Esto se debi\u00f3 a las las radicales divergencias entre la mentalidad pol\u00edtica de los otros griegos y la de los arcadios, poco inclinados al urbanismo y al Estado unitario (solo en el siglo VI las monedas indican una tenue estructura federativa panarc\u00e1dica). Pero la divergencia tambi\u00e9n fue religiosa, siendo los cultos arcadios muy diferentes al ol\u00edmpico, y, en todo caso, m\u00e1s cercanos a la magia prehist\u00f3rica.
