De esta investigaci\u00f3n, Varones atenienses, [23a]<\/b> se me originaron muchas enemistades y \u00a1qu\u00e9 pesadas e insoportables!; y de ellas, aun muchas calumnias, y el renombre mismo de sabio, porque los presentes creen que lo soy en las mismas cosas en que muestro a otro que no lo es. Lo que casi de seguro da en lo cierto es, Varones atenienses, que, en realidad de verdad, s\u00f3lo el Dios es sabio, y que el or\u00e1culo pretende decir \u00fanicamente: \u00abla sabidur\u00eda humana vale bien poco o nada\u00bb. Y no me parece querer decir que \u00abS\u00f3crates es sabio\u00bb, sino servirse [23b]<\/b> tan s\u00f3lo de mi nombre como de paradigma cual si dijera: \u00abaquel de vosotros, \u00a1oh, hombres!, ser\u00e1 superlativamente sabio quien, cual S\u00f3crates, reconozca que, frente a Sabidur\u00eda, la suya no vale nada\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Esto es lo que he intentado e intento mostrar en todas mis andanzas; y por esto pongo a examen seg\u00fan el Dios a cualquiera, ciudadano o extranjero, que me parezca sabio. Y si, despu\u00e9s de tal prueba, no me lo parece, le muestro, con ayuda del Dios, que no lo es. Y, as\u00ed por falta de tiempo, no tengo tiempo libre para hacer algo que valga la pena en favor de la Ciudad, ni de [23c]<\/b> los dom\u00e9sticos, sino que vivo en [23c]<\/b> grand\u00edsima pobreza por servir a dios.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pero adem\u00e1s, los j\u00f3venes que me acompa\u00f1an \u2014los hijos de los m\u00e1s ricos que son, sobre todo, los que tienen m\u00e1s vagar\u2014, se regocijan espont\u00e1neamente oyendo c\u00f3mo pruebo a las gentes, y aun ellos mismos me imitan muchas veces, y p\u00f3nense tambi\u00e9n a probar a otros. Y tengo entendido, adem\u00e1s, que hallan gran abundancia de gentes que se piensan saber algo, mas que saben poco o nada. De aqu\u00ed, pues, el que los probados por ellos se irriten contra m\u00ed en vez de irritarse contra ellos mismos, [23d]<\/b> y digan que hay \u00abun tal S\u00f3crates, abominable, corruptor de la juventud\u00bb. Y cuando se les pregunta qu\u00e9 es la que hace o ense\u00f1a para pervertirlos, no tienen ni saben qu\u00e9 decir; mas para no quedar cortados traen a colaci\u00f3n las ya manoseadas acusaciones contra todos los filosofantes: lo de \u00abastrolog\u00eda\u00bb, lo de \u00abbajo Tierra\u00bb, lo de \u00abno creer en dioses\u00bb, los de \u00abenderezadores de malas razones\u00bb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pienso que no querr\u00edan tener que decir la verdad: que han quedado al descubierto, por presumir saber sin nada. Y como, me parece, [23e]<\/b> son vanidosos, atrevidos y muchos, y hablan concorde y persuasivamente sobre m\u00ed, os han llenado los o\u00eddos ya desde mucho tiempo atr\u00e1s y me han calumniado encarnizadamente. De estos motivos proceden el ataque de Meleto, \u00c1nito y de Lic\u00f3n: de Meleto, presionado por los poetas; de \u00c1nito, por los artesanos y [24a]<\/b> pol\u00edticos; de Lic\u00f3n, por los oradores; de manera que, como dec\u00eda al principio, mucho me sorprender\u00eda si fuese capaz de expulsar de vosotros en tampoco tiempo tan crecida calumnia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tal es, Varones atenienses, la verdad; y os la he dicho sin ocultaros nada, ni poco ni mucho; sin disimularos nada. Now from this investigation, men of Athens, [23a]<\/b> many enmities have arisen against me, and such as are most harsh and grievous, so that many prejudices have resulted from them and I am called a wise man. For on each occasion those who are present think I am wise in the matters in which I confute someone else; but the fact is, gentlemen, it is likely that the god is really wise and by his oracle means this: \u201cHuman wisdom is of little or no value.\u201d And it appears that he does not really say this of Socrates, but [23b]<\/b> merely uses my name, and makes me an example, as if he were to say: \u201cThis one of you, O human beings, is wisest, who, like Socrates, recognises that he is in truth of no account in respect to wisdom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore I am still even now going about and searching and investigating at the god\u2019s behest anyone, whether citizen or foreigner, who I think is wise; and when he does not seem so to me, I give aid to the god and show that he is not wise. And by reason of this occupation I have no leisure to attend to any of the affairs of the state worth mentioning, or of my own, but am in [23c]<\/b> vast poverty on account of my service to the god.<\/span><\/p>\n

And in addition to these things, the young men who have the most leisure, the sons of the richest men, accompany me of their own accord, find pleasure in hearing people being examined, and often imitate me themselves, and then they undertake to examine others; and then, I fancy, they find a great plenty of people who think they know something, but know little or nothing. As a result, therefore, those who are examined by them are angry with me, instead of being angry with themselves, [23d]<\/b> and say that \u201cSocrates is a most abominable person and is corrupting the youth.\u201d And when anyone asks them \u201cby doing or teaching what?\u201d they have nothing to say, but they do not know, and that they may not seem to be at a loss they say these things that are handy to say against all the philosophers, \u201cthe things in the air and the things beneath the earth\u201d and \u201cnot to believe in the gods\u201d and \u201cto make the weaker argument the stronger.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For they would not, I fancy, care to say the truth, that it is being made very clear that they pretend to know, but know nothing.
