Devotion to the fatherland is itself dependent on education. This means that patriotism is not natural. Just as man is not by nature directed toward virtue, he is not by nature directed toward society. By nature man is radically selfish. Yet while men are by nature selfish, and nothing but selfish, hence bad, they can become social, public spirited, or good. This transformation requires compulsion. The success of this compulsion is due to the fact that man is amazingly malleable: much more so than had hitherto been thought. For if man is not by nature ordered toward virtue or perfection, if there is no natural end of man, man can set for himself almost any end he desires: man is almost infinitely malleable. El hombre es por naturaleza radicalmente ego\u00edsta. No obstante, aunque el hombre sea por naturaleza ego\u00edsta<\/span> <span lang=\"es-ES\">\u2014<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">y nada m\u00e1s que ego\u00edsta<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">\u2014, y por tanto malo, puede convertirse en un ser social, <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">en alguien animado por lo p\u00fablico, o en alguien bueno<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Esta transformaci\u00f3n requiere la coacci\u00f3n.<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> El \u00e9xito de esa coacci\u00f3n reside en el hecho de que el hombre es asombrosamente maleable; mucho m\u00e1s de lo <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">hasta ahora <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">hemos cre\u00eddo<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Porque, si <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">el hombre no se ve impulsado por naturaleza hacia la virtud o hacia la perfecci\u00f3n, si no existe ning\u00fan fin natural para \u00e9l, <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">entonces<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">, puede <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">seleccionar<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> pr\u00e1cticamente cualquier meta que desee: <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">e<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">l hombre es maleable <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">casi de manera<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> infinit<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">a<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">.
