Let us therefore consider the other <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">partner in the conversation, the Athenian philosopher. To dou<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">bt <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">the sacredness of the ancestral means to appeal from the ance<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">stral <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">to the natural. It means to transcend <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">all human <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">traditions, nay, <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">whole dimension of the merely human. It means to learn to <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">look <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">down on the human as something inferior or to leave the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">cave. But <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">by leaving the cave one loses sight of the city, of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">whole <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">political sphere. If the philosopher is to give political guidan<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ce, he <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">must return to the cave: from the light of the sun to the wo<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">rld <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">of shadows; his perception must be dimmed; his mind must under<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">go <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">an obfuscation. The vicarious enjoyment of wine through a <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">conversation <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">about wine, which enlarges the horizon of the <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">law-bred old <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">citizens, <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">limits<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\"> the horizon of the philosopher. But this <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">obfuscation, this acc<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">eptance of the political perspective, this adoption <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">of <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">the language of political man, this achievement of harmony <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">bet<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ween the excellence of man and the excellence of the citizen, <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">or <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">between wisdom and law-abidingness is, it seems, the most no<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ble <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">exercise of the virtue of moderation: wine-drinking educates moderation. For moderation is not a virtue of thought: Pla<\/span>to <span lang=\"en-GB\">likens philosophy to madness, the very opposite of sobriety moderation; thought must be not moderate, but fearless, not to s<\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">ay <\/span><span lang=\"en-GB\">shameless. Intentemos, por ello, considerar la posici\u00f3n del otro miembro de la conversaci\u00f3n, el fil\u00f3sofo ateniense. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Al dudar del car\u00e1cter sagrado de lo ancestral se est\u00e1 apelando a lo natural frente a lo tradicional. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Esto implica aprender a menospreciar lo humano como algo inferior o abandonar la caverna.<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> Pero al <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">abandonar<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> la caverna se pierde de vista la ciudad, la esfera pol\u00edtica <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">al completo<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. Si <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">el <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">fil\u00f3sofo <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">pretende ofrecer orientaci\u00f3n y consejo en pol\u00edtica debe volver a la caverna: <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">dejar<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> la luz del sol <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">para volver <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">al mundo de las sombras; <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">su percepci\u00f3n debe ser atenuada; su mente debe de experimentar cierta enajenaci\u00f3n<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. El disfrute suced\u00e1neo del vino a trav\u00e9s de una conversaci\u00f3n <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">sobre el vino<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">, que ampl\u00eda el horizonte de los viejos ciudadanos <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">criados en el marco de la ley<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">, <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">limita<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> el horizonte del fil\u00f3sofo. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Pero esta enajenaci\u00f3n, esta aceptaci\u00f3n de la perspectiva pol\u00edtica, esta adopci\u00f3n del lenguaje del hombre pol\u00edtico, este logro de la armon\u00eda <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">entre la excelencia del hombre y la excelencia del ciudadano, o entre la sabidur\u00eda y <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">la perdurabilidad de la ley <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">es, al parecer, el m\u00e1s noble ejercicio de la templanza <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">\u2014<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">la virtud de la moderaci\u00f3n<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">Por tanto, beber vino instruye en la<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\"> moderaci\u00f3n. La moderaci\u00f3n no es una virtud del pensamiento: Plat\u00f3n vincula la filosof\u00eda a la locura, <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">precisamente lo <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">opuesto a la sobriedad y a la moderaci\u00f3n; el pensamiento no debe ser moderado, sino temerario, por no decir desvergonzado. La moderaci\u00f3n \u2014<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">la templanza<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">\u2014, sin embargo, es la virtud <\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">en control del discurso del fil\u00f3sofo<\/span><span lang=\"es-ES\">. Pero esta ofuscaci\u00f3n, esta aceptaci\u00f3n de la perspectiva pol\u00edtica, esta adopci\u00f3n del lenguaje del hombre pol\u00edtico, este logro de la armon\u00eda entre la excelencia del hombre y la excelencia del ciudadano, o entre la sabidur\u00eda y el respeto a las leyes, es, al parecer, el ejercicio m\u00e1s noble de la virtud de la moderaci\u00f3n: beber vino educa la moderaci\u00f3n. Pues la moderaci\u00f3n no es una virtud del pensamiento: Plat\u00f3n compara la filosof\u00eda con la locura, lo opuesto a la sobriedad, la moderaci\u00f3n; el pensamiento no debe ser moderado, sino valiente, por no decir desvergonzado.
