Of philosophy thus understood, political philosophy is a branch. Political philosophy will then be the attempt to replace opinion about the nature of political things by knowledge of the nature of political things. Political things are by their nature subject to approval and disapproval, to choice and rejection, to praise and blame. It is of their essence not to be neutral but to raise a claim to men’s obedience, allegiance, decision or judgment. One does not understand them as what they are, as political things, if one does not take seriously their explicit or implicit claim to be judged in terms of goodness or badness, of justice or injustice, i.e., if one does not measure them by some standard of goodness or justice. To judge soundly one must know the true standards. If political philosophy wishes to do justice to its subject matter, it must strive for genuine knowledge of these standards. Political philosophy is the attempt truly to know both the nature of political things and the right, or the good, political order.

De la filosofía así entendida, la filosofía política es una rama. La filosofía política es un intento de sustituir la opinión acerca de la naturaleza de los asuntos políticos por conocimiento de la naturaleza de los asuntos políticas. Lo político está sujeto por naturaleza a aprobación y desaprobación, aceptación y repulsa, a aclamación y a vituperio. Lleva en su esencia el no ser neutral; sino más bien originar la exigencia de obediencia, lealtad, decisión o valoración de los hombres. Uno no puede entender estos asuntos tal como son, como asuntos políticos, si no se toma en serio su exigencia implícita o explícita de ser juzgados en términos de bondad o maldad, de justicia o injusticia, es decir, si no se aplican unos estándares de bondad o justicia. Para valorar de manera sensata es preciso conocer los estándares verdaderos. Si la filosofía política quiere hacer justicia a su objeto, esta tiene que esforzarse en lograr un conocimiento genuino de estos estándares. La filosofía política consiste en el intento de realmente adquirir conocimientos tanto de la naturaleza de los asuntos políticos como del orden político correcto, o del buen orden político.
