ΣΩ. Οὐ τοίνυν τῆς ἐπιούσης ἡμέρας οἶμαι αὐτὸ ἥξειν ἀλλὰ τῆς ἑτέρας. τεκμαίρομαι δὲ ἔκ τινος ἐνυπνίου ὃ ἑώρακα ὀλίγον πρότερον ταύτης τῆς νυκτός· καὶ κινδυνεύεις ἐν καιρῷ τινι οὐκ ἐγεῖραί με.

ΚΡ. Ἦν δὲ δὴ τί τὸ ἐνύπνιον;

ΣΩ. Ἐδόκει τίς μοι γυνὴ προσελθοῦσα καλὴ καὶ εὐειδής, [44b] λευκὰ ἱμάτια ἔχουσα, καλέσαι με καὶ εἰπεῖν· ‘ὦ Σώκρατες,

ἤματί κεν τριτάτῳ Φθίην ἐρίβωλον ἵκοιο.¹

ΚΡ. Ἄτοπον τὸ ἐνύπνιον, ὦ Σώκρατες.

ΣΩ. Ἐναργὲς μὲν οὖν, ὥς γέ μοι δοκεῖ, ὦ Κρίτων.

ΚΡ. Λίαν γε, ὡς ἔοικεν. ἀλλ᾽, ὦ δαιμόνιε Σώκρατες, ἔτι καὶ νῦν ἐμοὶ πιθοῦ καὶ σώθητι· ὡς ἐμοί, ἐὰν σὺ ἀποθάνῃς, οὐ μία συμφορά ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ χωρὶς μὲν τοῦ ἐστερῆσθαι τοιούτου ἐπιτηδείου οἷον ἐγὼ οὐδένα μή ποτε εὑρήσω, ἔτι δὲ καὶ πολλοῖς δόξω, οἳ ἐμὲ καὶ σὲ μὴ σαφῶς ἴσασιν, [44c] ὡς οἷός τ᾽ ὤν σε σῴζειν εἰ ἤθελον ἀναλίσκειν χρήματα, ἀμελῆσαι. καίτοι τίς ἂν αἰσχίων εἴη ταύτης δόξα ἢ δοκεῖν χρήματα περὶ πλείονος ποιεῖσθαι ἢ φίλους; οὐ γὰρ πείσονται οἱ πολλοὶ ὡς σὺ αὐτὸς οὐκ ἠθέλησας ἀπιέναι ἐνθένδε ἡμῶν προθυμουμένων.

ΣΩ. Ἀλλὰ τί ἡμῖν, ὦ μακάριε Κρίτων, οὕτω τῆς τῶν πολλῶν δόξης μέλει; οἱ γὰρ ἐπιεικέστατοι, ὧν μᾶλλον ἄξιον φροντίζειν, ἡγήσονται αὐτὰ οὕτω πεπρᾶχθαι ὥσπερ ἂν πραχθῇ.

Critón 003

SÓCRATES.— Mas pienso que no llegará en este día que apunto, sino en el otro. Y lo saco por testimonio de un cierto ensueño que vi hace poco durante la noche; así que tal vez en buena hora no me despertaste.

CRITÓN.— Y ¿cuál era ese ensueño?

SÓC.— Me pareció que hacia mí venía una mujer hermosa y bella-de-ver, [44b] vestida de blanco, que me llamó y me dijo: «Sócrates,

al tercer día llegarás a Ftía la fértil».

CRIT.— En verdad desconcertante ensueño, Sócrates.

SÓC.— Pero bien claro a mi parecer, Critón.

CRIT.— Demasiado al mío también. Pero, Sócrates daimoníaco, una vez más créeme y ponte en salvo. Que, si te mueres, no será para mí esto una sola desgracia, sino que, además de perder un tal allegado, cual jamás voy a encontrar otro, dará que pensar a muchos de los que no nos conocen bien ni a ti ni a mí [44c] que, pudiéndolo hacer, no te puse a salvo, sino que dejé perder la ocasión, por no gastar unos dineros. Y ¿qué de más vergonzoso que dar la impresión de tener en más a los dineros que a los amigos? Porque la mayoría no se persuadirá de que tú mismo no quisiste, a pesar de nuestros esfuerzos, salir de aquí.

SÓC.— Pero ¿qué nos importa a ti y a mí, Critón feliz, la opinión de los más?; que los sensatos-de-veras, únicos de los que vale la pena preocuparse, pensarán que las cosas han pasado como debieron pasar.

Crito 003

Socrates.— Well, I think it will not come in today, but tomorrow. And my reason for this is a dream which I had a little while ago in the course of this night. And perhaps you let me sleep just at the right time.

Crito.— What was the dream?

Socr.— I dreamed that a beautiful, fair woman, clothed in white raiment, came to me and called me [44b] and said, “Socrates,

on the third day thou wouldst come to fertile Phthia.

Crito.— A strange dream, Socrates.

Socr.— No, a clear one, at any rate, I think, Crito.

Crito.— Too clear, apparently. But, my dear Socrates, even now listen to me and save yourself. Since, if you die, it will be no mere single misfortune to me, but I shall lose a friend such as I can never find again, and besides, many persons who do not know you and me well [44c] will think I could have saved you if I had been willing to spend money, but that I would not take the trouble. And yet what reputation could be more disgraceful than that of considering one’s money of more importance than one’s friends? For most people will not believe that we were eager to help you to go away from here, but you refused.

Socr.— But, my dear Crito, why do we care so much for what most people think? For the most reasonable men, whose opinion is more worth considering, will think that things were done as they really will be done.
