Ἐν παντὶ δὲ μάλιστα φυλακτέον τὸ ἡδὺ καὶ τὴν ἡδονήν· οὐ γὰρ ἀδέκαστοι κρίνομεν αὐτήν. ὅπερ οὖν οἱ δημογέροντες ἔπαθον πρὸς τὴν Ἑλένην, [10] τοῦτο δεῖ παθεῖν καὶ ἡμᾶς πρὸς τὴν ἡδονήν, καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τὴν ἐκείνων ἐπιλέγειν φωνήν· οὕτω γὰρ αὐτὴν ἀποπεμπόμενοι ἧττον ἁμαρτησόμεθα. ταῦτ᾽ οὖν ποιοῦντες, ὡς ἐν κεφαλαίῳ εἰπεῖν, μάλιστα δυνησόμεθα τοῦ μέσου τυγχάνειν.

En toda ocasión, hay que guardarse principalmente de lo agradable y del placer, porque no lo juzgamos con imparcialidad. Así, respecto del placer, debemos sentir lo que sintieron los ancianos del pueblo a la vista de Helena,¹ y repetir sus palabras en todos los casos; pues si nos alejamos de él erraremos menos. Para decirlo en una palabra, si hacemos esto, podremos alcanzar mejor el término medio.

Thirdly, we must in everything be most of all on our guard against what is pleasant and against pleasure; for when pleasure is on her trial we are not impartial judges. The right course is therefore to feel towards pleasure as the elders of the people felt towards Helen,² and to apply³ their words to her on every occasion; for if we roundly bid her be gone, we shall be less likely to err.

In omni autem negocio cum id omne quod voluptatem efficit, tum vel maxime vitanda voluptas est: quippe de qua nōn veniamus incorrupti ad iudicandum. Quocirca quo animo senes illī erga Helenen affecti fuerunt, eodem nōs esse debemus erga voluptatem, ad omnemque ratiōnem illōrum vōx accommodanda est. sīc enim dimissa illa & abiecta minus aberrabimus. Ut ergo rem in pauca conferam, haec si faciemus, facillimē poterimus & cōnsequī & servāre mediocritātem.
