καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ἦν ἔτι δημοκρατουμένης τῆς πόλεως: ἐπειδὴ δὲ ὀλιγαρχία ἐγένετο, οἱ τριάκοντα αὖ μεταπεμψάμενοί με πέμπτον αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν θόλον προσέταξαν ἀγαγεῖν ἐκ Σαλαμῖνος Λέοντα τὸν Σαλαμίνιον ἵνα ἀποθάνοι, οἷα δὴ καὶ ἄλλοις ἐκεῖνοι πολλοῖς πολλὰ προσέταττον, βουλόμενοι ὡς πλείστους ἀναπλῆσαι αἰτιῶν. τότε μέντοι ἐγὼ [32d] οὐ λόγῳ ἀλλ᾽ ἔργῳ αὖ ἐνεδειξάμην ὅτι ἐμοὶ θανάτου μὲν μέλει, εἰ μὴ ἀγροικότερον ἦν εἰπεῖν, οὐδ᾽ ὁτιοῦν, τοῦ δὲ μηδὲν ἄδικον μηδ᾽ ἀνόσιον ἐργάζεσθαι, τούτου δὲ τὸ πᾶν μέλει. ἐμὲ γὰρ ἐκείνη ἡ ἀρχὴ οὐκ ἐξέπληξεν, οὕτως ἰσχυρὰ οὖσα, ὥστε ἄδικόν τι ἐργάσασθαι, ἀλλ᾽ ἐπειδὴ ἐκ τῆς θόλου ἐξήλθομεν, οἱ μὲν τέτταρες ᾤχοντο εἰς Σαλαμῖνα καὶ ἤγαγον Λέοντα, ἐγὼ δὲ ᾠχόμην ἀπιὼν οἴκαδε. καὶ ἴσως ἂν διὰ ταῦτα ἀπέθανον, εἰ μὴ ἡ ἀρχὴ διὰ ταχέων κατελύθη. καὶ [32e] τούτων ὑμῖν ἔσονται πολλοὶ μάρτυρες.

Y todo esto sucedió cuando la Ciudad se gobernaba aún por democracia; que, cuando sobrevino la oligarquía, los Treinta me llamaron a mí y a cinco en total a la Rotunda, y mandaron traer de Salamina a León de Salamina para matarlo; que tales cosas, y muchas, ordenaron los Treinta a otros muchos, como si quisieran complicar en crímenes a cuantos más mejor. En esta ocasión puse, una vez más, de manifiesto no con palabras sino con obras —si no fuera [32d] demasiado salvaje decirlo— que no me preocupo lo más mínimo de la muerte; por el contrario, toda mi preocupación fue no hacer nada ni injusto ni impío. Pues bien: aquel régimen, aun y siendo tan prepotente, no me atemorizó hasta el extremo de hacer algo injusto; sino que, en cuanto salimos de la Rotunda, los cuatro se partieron para Salamina y trajeron a León; yo, por el contrario, en saliendo, me partí para casa. Y tal vez esto me hubiese costado la vida, si no se hubiera acabado el régimen tan por lo breve. Y [32e] de estas cosas muchos os pueden ser testigos.

That was when the democracy still existed; and after the oligarchy was established, the Thirty sent for me with four others to come to the rotunda and ordered us to bring Leon the Salaminian from Salamis to be put to death. They gave many such orders to others also, because they wished to implicate as many in their crimes as they could. Then I, however, [32d] showed again, by action, not in word only, that I did not care a whit for death if that be not too rude an expression, but that I did care with all my might not to do anything unjust or unholy. For that government, with all its power, did not frighten me into doing anything unjust, but when we came out of the rotunda, the other four went to Salamis and arrested Leon, but I simply went home; and perhaps I should have been put to death for it, if the government had not [32e] quickly been put down. Of these facts you can have many witnesses.
